2 held for theft at jewellery store

Chandigarh:

The police have arrested two persons for their alleged involvement in a theft at Reeva Jewellers in Sector 23 here. The police also recovered stolen items from their possession.

The police said Anil Vishavkarma (35) and Rajiv (23), both residents of Rajpura in Patiala district, had been arrested in the case that took place on June 14.

In a complaint to the police, Pintu Midda and Rupak Malik, owners of Reeva Jewellers, had stated that they closed their shop at 8 pm on June 13. Keys of the shop were with Pintu. When he went to the shop the next day around 10.40 am, he found the shutter broken and jewellery (gold and diamonds) missing.

On their complaint, a case under Section 381 of the IPC was registered at the Sector 17 police station on June 14.

During investigation, CCTV footage was thoroughly checked. It was found that three persons came to the shop in an auto and committed theft at 5.30 am on June 14. Registration number of the auto was not clear due to low-picture quality of the camera. However, the list of complete series of suspected numbers of the auto-rickshaw were obtained and a few numbers were scrutinised. Teams were sent to the addresses of all suspected scrutinised numbers of the auto-rickshaw and finally the exact one was traced.

After cross-questioning the auto driver, it came to light that two accused had hired the auto from the Sector 22/23 light point up to Zirakpur. When they sat in the auto, they requested him to take them to the Sector 23 market for some work. Hence, the auto driver took them to the Sector 23 market in front of Reeva Jewellers. One accused went upstairs and came within a few minutes with a bag. The driver dropped them at the Zirakpur light point.

When the auto drive described about the suspects, it apprehended that the accused might be related to the workers of Reeva Jewellers.

On June 27, one of the accused was arrested on the identification of the auto driver, one of the prime witnesses, and two gold bangles affixed with ruby stones and a number of diamonds were recovered from him. He also disclosed that he committed the crime with his associate Rajiv, who had the remaining stolen jewellery items with him.

Co-accused Rajiv was also arrested the same day on the identification of the auto driver as well as complainant Pintu and some gold ornaments were recovered from him at the time of the arrest. On Friday, Rajiv was produced before a court and sent to one-day police remand. During police remand, the remaining stolen jewellery items were recovered on the disclosure of Rajiv.

On Saturday, Rajiv was produced before a court, which sent him to judicial custody for 14 days.
